What is UPSC and Why is It Important?
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts India’s most prestigious Civil Services
Examination (CSE) to recruit officers for:

1. Nationality Criteria:
- Only Indian citizens can apply for IAS, IPS, and IFS.
- Indian citizens and certain other nationalities (as per UPSC rules) can apply for other central services.
2. Educational Qualification:
- A graduate degree (in any subject) from a recognised university.
- Final-year students can apply but must submit proof of graduation before Mains.
- No minimum percentage requirement in graduation.
3. Age Limit & Attempt Criteria:

4. Physical & Medical Standards:
- Required for IPS, IFS, and certain services.
- Candidates must meet vision, hearing, height, and general health standards.
5. Reservation & Relaxation Benefits:
- SC/ST & OBC Candidates – Age relaxation and fee exemption.
- EWS (Economically Weaker Section) Candidates – 10% reservation in vacancies.
Stage 1: Prelims (May-June 2026)
The UPSC Preliminary Examination is a screening test and does not count towards the final ranking. Only candidates who clear Prelims cut-off qualify for Mains.

- Indian Polity & Governance (Constitution, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy)
- Geography (Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India & World)
- Indian Economy (Basic concepts, budgeting, planning, growth & development)
- General Science & Technology
- Environmental Ecology, Climate Change, & Biodiversity
- Current Affairs (National & International Importance)
Cut-off Based Selection:
- The cut-off varies yearly based on difficulty level and competition.
- Marks in Paper 1 decide selection for Mains.
Paper 2: CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test)
- Number of Questions: 80
Syllabus Coverage:
- Comprehension & English Language Skills
- Logical Reasoning & Analytical Ability
- Basic Mathematics & Data Interpretation (10th Standard Level)
- Only 33% required to qualify (Marks not counted in ranking).
- Many students struggle due to overconfidence – regular practice is necessary.

- Candidates choose 1 Optional Subject (like History, Public Administration, Political Science, Sociology, etc.)
- Each paper carries 250 Marks (Total 500 Marks)
Total Marks for Mains = 1750 (Excluding Language Papers A & B, which are just qualifying).
Stage 3: Interview (Feb-March 2027)
- Conducted at UPSC Bhavan, Delhi
- Marks: 275
- Total Merit Calculation: Mains (1750) + Interview (275) = 2025 Marks
